Going for Hajj in 2025? Do These 10 Things Before You Leave
The opportunity to perform Hajj is a divine invitation an experience that transforms the heart, mind, and soul. If you’re
The first step in your Hajj journey is entering the sacred state of Ihram. This is a pivotal moment that symbolizes your intention to perform Hajj solely for the sake of Allah. Ihram is not just a physical change of clothing but also a mental and spiritual transition, marking the start of a deeply sacred journey.
Ihram is a state of purity and dedication that all pilgrims must enter before starting the rites of Hajj. It involves wearing specific garments and refraining from certain actions, allowing you to focus solely on worship and devotion.
Ihram is a symbol of equality and humility, as all pilgrims wear the same simple garments, regardless of their social status or wealth. This symbolizes the unity of the Ummah in the worship of Allah.
Preparation for Ihram: Before entering Ihram, make sure you are spiritually prepared. Perform Ghusl (ritual purification) to ensure cleanliness. This is a Sunnah and helps you mentally prepare for the sacred journey. While not obligatory, it’s highly recommended to wear the best possible clothes before entering Ihram.
The Miqat (Boundary Points): Ihram must be entered at the designated Miqat, a boundary point around Makkah. These locations serve as spiritual markers where pilgrims are required to don the Ihram garments. The Miqat points are located at different places depending on the direction from which the pilgrim arrives:
Dhul Hulaifah (for those coming from Madinah)
Juhfah (for those coming from the west)
Qarn al-Manazil (for those coming from the east)
Yalamlam (for those coming from the south)
Zat al-Irq (for those coming from the northern regions)
Wearing the Ihram Garments:
For Men: The Ihram consists of two white unstitched cloths. One is wrapped around the waist covering the lower body, and the other is draped over the shoulder and chest, leaving the arms exposed.
For Women: Women wear simple, modest clothing, ensuring that their entire body is covered except for the face and hands.
Intention (Niyyah): As you enter the Miqat, you must make the intention (Niyyah) for Hajj. This is done mentally in your heart, where you state that you are entering Ihram for the sake of Allah, intending to perform Hajj. It’s important to remember that this intention is not just for the physical act but for the spiritual journey you’re about to undertake.
Once you’ve made the intention, recite the Talbiyah:
“Labbayk Allahumma Hajj, Labbayk laa shareeka laka Labbayk…”
(“Here I am, O Allah, at Your service. Here I am for Hajj, You have no partner. Here I am.”)
Refraining from Certain Actions: Once you’ve entered Ihram, certain actions are prohibited to ensure purity of the soul and focus on worship:
No cutting of hair or nails.
No wearing of perfume.
No engaging in marital relations.
No killing of animals.
No arguing or fighting.
No covering the face (for men) or hands (for women) with a veil or gloves.
These restrictions help you focus on your spiritual journey and maintain humility during your Hajj pilgrimage.
Ihram is more than just a physical state of dress. It is a spiritual state that prepares you to approach Allah with a pure heart, free from distractions. The simplicity of the Ihram garments reminds you that you are all equal in the eyes of Allah, and the journey you are about to take is one of devotion, worship, and humility.
Entering Ihram is the first step in your journey toward the sacred rites of Hajj. It signifies your commitment to obeying the commands of Allah, putting aside the distractions of the worldly life, and focusing entirely on worship.
Stay calm and composed: The journey ahead is filled with blessings. Ensure your heart is prepared for the spiritual significance of the rites.
Double-check your documents and travel plans: Before entering Ihram, ensure all your travel documents are in order, including your Hajj visa, accommodation details, and flight information.
Remember the significance: Reflect on the great privilege of being able to perform Hajj and stand in front of Allah in the Holy Masjid al-Haram.
Entering the state of Ihram is the first step in your Hajj pilgrimage and marks the start of an unforgettable spiritual journey. The simplicity of Ihram allows you to focus on what truly matters—your worship and connection with Allah. Prepare your heart, make the intention, and let the journey to the House of Allah begin.
